What to Check in Your Vehicle Before a Road Trip

The Tires

When you stop to consider the tires in your vehicle, you understand how much work they actually do. Not only do they pick your vehicle up, holding its weight and of everything in it, but they have to endure hours and hours of friction with the road. Plus, they need to resist even if there are puddles, potholes, snow, dirt, and other elements on the road. For this reason, you must check your tires before you leave. Make sure that they are inflated enough and that they don't show any signs of damage. Remember to check the spare, too, in case it's needed.

The Vehicle's Fluids

Your vehicle is made up of different systems, and many of them require fluids to function properly. For instance, the engine needs synthetic oil to run smoothly. The brakes need braking fluid to lubricate and transfer power. The cooling system requires a coolant to regulate the temperature in your vehicle. And so on. Before you leave, inspect the different fluids and verify that they're in the right shape. If needed, change them up, so they're ready to go. If they're leaking, get your vehicle to a mechanic promptly, as your vehicle probably isn't in any condition to take you on a road trip.

Your Ability to See and Be Seen

It should go without saying that to have a safe drive, you need to see and be seen on the road. However, there are a few things that you need to check to make sure that your visibility is at its finest. For starters, you need to guarantee that your battery is in good shape, as it will power many of the features you need. Next, you have to inspect your lights (headlights, brake lights, blinkers, hazards, etc.). You also have to check your mirrors: are they all there? Are they cracked? Remember to take a look at your windshield and back glass. Finally, if you need glasses to see the road, be sure to have them with you, too.

The Emergency Supplies

An emergency can happen, even when you're trying to have a fun time on the road. If you want to contain the situation and deal with it successfully, you have to have certain emergency supplies. Check each one to guarantee you have it and that it's in good shape. For instance, you have to have your toolbox and mechanic tools with you (tire jack, jumper cables, etc.). You may also need a first aid kit (filled with the basic medical equipment and medicine). Certain tools (like a fire extinguisher, flashlight, an umbrella, etc.) can also be useful. Finally, you may need communication devices (with their chargers) and contact information just in case.

A General Inspection

Lastly, it's a great idea to take your vehicle to a mechanic for a general inspection before your trip. Tell them your plans, so they can pay special attention to your vehicle's condition and so they can provide the fine-tuning it requires so your vehicle can drive you smoothly to your destination and back.
