Traveling with your pet can be a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience. However, if you want to have a comfortable and safe ride, too, you should follow the tips in this post by Lee ; Rita Downhill in Quinte West

Nowadays, we think of our pets as family. We take care of them, spoil them, and take them wherever we go. We want to spend as much time with them as possible and create new memories. If you can see yourself in the statements above, then you've surely thought about going on road trips with your pet. It can be great fun and an enjoyable time. Still, as you probably know, traveling with your pet comes with its fair share of challenges. To make sure you both will be comfortable and safe during your upcoming road trips, the following post will share a few tips on how you can travel with your pet.

To go on a road trip, you need a strong and healthy vehicle. Call Lee ; Rita Downhill in Quinte West at (613) 398-1144 or browse AMSOIL's online store to purchase products that can maintain it in top working shape.

How to Travel with Pets

Designate a Safe Spot for Them

Arguably the biggest challenge of traveling with your pet is that they can become a distraction when you're behind the wheel. Needless to say, this can be bad news, as distractions can lead to accidents. To keep you and them safe, designate a spot for them. Limit their space and use a crate or safety harness to keep them there.

Train Them With Months of Anticipation

Going on long rides can be stressful, uncomfortable, and tedious for your pet. For this reason, you have to train them with months of anticipation. For one, ensure they're potty trained before you go on your trip. Likewise, many pets experience motion sickness in the car, so take yours on shorter drivers to get them used to the movement and keep them from getting dizzy and puking.

Ensure Your Pet is Ready

As mentioned above, you have to plan your road trips with enough time so that your pet is ready to go on them. However, as the date comes closer, you also need to take care of a few other things. For instance, wash them and brush their fur so your car won't be stinky and furry. On the day of the drive, have them go potty before they get on and avoid overfeeding them so they can be comfy.

Pack Up Your Bags

Traveling with your pet is somewhat like traveling with a young kid, in the sense that you need to get everything ready for them, including packing their bags. Verify your pet will have food, plates, a brush, vaccination records, snacks, a leash, and their favorite toys. They should also wear a collar with an ID and your information.

Ensure Your Vehicle is Ready

Your vehicle is the one responsible for taking you and your pet on your road trip, which is why you need to ensure it is ready. To that end, take them to a mechanic, so it gets the maintenance it needs. Another way to get it ready is to lay down a blanket where your pet will be to protect the interiors from fur, drool, and more.

Entertain Them

As stated above, car rides can be boring, dizzying, uncomfortable, and stressful for your pet, which is why you should seek ways to take their mind off of them. To keep them entertained, you can give them their favorite toy so they can play with it. Just try to avoid snacks, as this could make them sick.

Take a Few Breaks

Lastly, give your pet a chance to rest, relax, stretch, and have fun during the road trip. Take a few breaks during the road trip so they can walk around, play, go potty, and drink a bit of water/eat. This will make the trip much more pleasant for both of you.
